Last
Call: Dreams, Main Street, and the Search for Community
Last Call is a cautionary tale of how local culture is lost
in the face of big money and gentrification. The life and
times of the Bosun's Locker, an infamous bar the late, great,
Boston Globe columnist and jazz writer George Frazier called,
"the last great saloon on the East Coast" included
hippies, locals, commercial fisherman, and yacht club types.
It was also the anchor of downtown during the years (1962-1970)
that were the tipping point between small town Nantucket and
the exclusive playground for the wealthy it is now. Nantucket
is an extreme example. But this is a story that happens in
small towns and big city neighborhoods across America.
